Day 1 Notes – Introduction to SEO
Topic: What is SEO?
Definition
SEO
(Search Engine Optimization) is the process of optimizing a website to improve
its visibility in search engine results (primarily Google) and increase organic
(non-paid) traffic.
Goal of
SEO:
- Improve website rankings
- Increase organic traffic
- Enhance user experience
- Generate more leads,
appointments, or sales
What is a Search Engine?
A search
engine is a software system that helps users find information on the internet.
Examples
- Google
- Bing
- DuckDuckGo
- Yahoo
Google is
the most widely used search engine, making it the primary focus of SEO.
Types of Search Results
1. Paid Search Results (Advertisements)
- Businesses pay Google to
display their websites.
- Usually marked with "Sponsored."
2. Organic Search Results
- These results appear
naturally based on SEO.
- No payment is made for
ranking.
- The objective of SEO is to
rank higher in organic search results.
How Google Works
Google
follows three major steps before displaying a webpage in search results.
Step 1: Crawling
Google
uses automated programs called Googlebots (or Crawlers) to discover and
visit webpages.
During
crawling, Googlebot:
- Visits webpages
- Follows internal links
- Reads website content
- Discovers new pages
Step 2: Indexing
After
crawling, Google analyzes the page.
If the
page meets Google's quality and technical requirements, it is stored in
Google's database.
This
process is called Indexing.
Important:
If a page is not indexed, it cannot appear in Google Search results.
Step 3: Ranking
When a
user searches for a query, Google searches its index and displays the most
relevant pages.
Google
ranks pages based on many factors, including:
- Content quality
- Relevance
- User experience
- Website speed
- Mobile friendliness
- Authority and
trustworthiness
Google's Primary Goal
Google's
mission is:
To
provide users with the most relevant, useful, trustworthy, and high-quality
information for every search query.
SEO
should focus on helping users rather than trying to manipulate search rankings.
The Three Main Pillars of
SEO
1. On-Page SEO
Optimization
performed directly on website pages.
Examples:
- Title Tags
- Meta Descriptions
- Headings (H1-H6)
- URL Structure
- Content Optimization
- Internal Linking
- Image Optimization
2. Off-Page SEO
Activities
performed outside the website to improve authority.
Examples:
- Backlinks
- Brand Mentions
- Local Citations
- Digital PR
3. Technical SEO
Technical
improvements that help search engines crawl, index, and understand the website.
Examples:
- XML Sitemap
- Robots.txt
- Page Speed Optimization
- Core Web Vitals
- Mobile Friendliness
- Canonical Tags
- HTTPS
- Structured Data (Schema
Markup)
Real-Time Healthcare SEO
Example
A
hospital website may contain the following pages:
Home
│
├── Specialties
├── Doctors
├── Diseases
├── Conditions
├── Procedures
├── Blogs
└── Book Appointment
Googlebot
crawls these pages, indexes them, and ranks the most relevant page when a user
searches for related medical terms.
